Abbie Batchelder, wearing her own design Abbie Batchelder's passion for jewelry can be traced back to her midnight visits to her mother's jewelry box. Her parents would often be awakened to the sight of their little girl fully draped in jewels and thoroughly enjoying herself. Over the years she pursued many interests including batik and surface design on fabric in Italy to working with faux painting artists in Boston but jewelry has always remained her first creative passion.

While attending a wedding in 2001 wearing a five strand turquoise bracelet that has now become her trademark design, she was struck by how many people went out of their way to ask her about it. In 2003 she turned her passion into a business and founded Batu Designs based in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Always using natural elements in her creations, her work stays true to the meaning of Batu - the Indonesian word for stone.

Her collections reflect her love of stones and semi-precious gems and include such unique combinations as yellow turquoise with delicate pink coral and chunks of red coral with faceted black onyx, lava and wood. Each piece is hand-made to combine these and other natural elements to create simple, elegant and distinctively modern pieces.
